Seed
Technology Institute Australia Pty Ltd (STIA) (ACN 099-061-088)
is a registered company established in December 2001 by four international
seed technologists; Kevin Boyce, Murray Hill, John Hampton and
Karen Hill (see STIA people profiles).

Our
Vision
STIA’s
guiding vision is to be a preferred Australian provider of seed
services to industry, and Asia/Pacific leaders in the provision
of training and consultancy to national and international seed
technologists and seed industries.
Our
Mission
To
become a preferred provider of seed services to industry, STIA
aims to deliver quality services to the Australian and Asia/Pacific
seed industries and ancillary serviced providers.
Our
Strategic Intent
The
strategic intent of STIA is to maintain and enhance a quality
seed testing service for the Australian seed industry, develop
a seed testing/seed technology training service for Australia
and other Asia/Pacific nations, and
maintain and enhance an expertise base in seed technology.
STIA
is a member of the Australian Seed Federation Ltd (ASF), the Australian
Seeds AuthorityLtd (ASA) and the International Seed Testing Association
(ISTA).
The
Queensland Seed Technology Laboratory is an Accredited Laboratory
with ISTA authorised to issue international seed analyst certificates
for seed exported from Australia and accredited with the Australian
Quarantine and Inspection Service of the Australian Government
to test seed for quarantine purposes for imported seed and seed
destined for export under phytosanitary inspection.
STIA
SERVICES
Queensland
Seed Technology Laboratory (AUDL02)
STIA operates the Queensland Seed Technology Laboratory (QSTL)
located at the Gatton campus of the University of Queensland,
under an agreement between STIA and the University of Queensland.
QSTL is accredited by the International Seed Testing Association,
and authorised to issue ISTA
seed analysis certificates for export seed lots.
QSTL also has an important role in quarantine testing for seed
imports and exports, and maintains a collection of 18,000 accessions
of seeds of tropical and temperate species on behalf of the
Queensland DPI.
QSTL staff have expertise in testing seeds of both tropical
and temperate species, and QSTL offers seed testing services
to farmers, seed producers and commercial clients throughout
Australia.
Training
Since
2001, STIA has run an Australian Seed Industry Training Course
at Gatton which covers the areas of seed production, seed quality
and post-harvest seed technologies.
STIA can offer training in seed analysis and any aspects of
seed technology for both national and international clients.
STIA’s linkage with the School of Agronomy and Horticulture
of the University of Queensland provides opportunities for both
undergraduate and postgraduate training in seed technology.
Technical
Consultancy
Each
of the STIA Directors has conducted expert consultancy in areas
of seed science and technology for Governments, International
bodies and Industry and hence STIA is technically competent
to continue to offer these services to both Government and Industry
in Australia and internationally.
Consultancy services encompass strategic policy development,
specialist technical advice and technical resolution research
and development.
